On the left, Jeff Hamilton, Sam Houston's former slave, who wrote a memoir/biography of his life with Sam Houston, My Master: The Inside Story of Sam Houston and His Times; in the center, Samuel Walker Houston (son of Joshua Houston, former slave of Sam Houston), who established the Sam Houston Industrial Training School in the Galilee community west of Huntsville in 1906. At the time of the photograph he was Principal at Samuel Houston High School, the African American high school in Huntsville, a member of the Commission for Interracial Cooperation, and a founding member of the Huntsville Negro Chamber of Commerce.
