Ashley Home

Ashley Home, 1403 14th Street. The house is a large, unadorned vernacular dwelling whose modified L-plan form is derived from Queen Anne style designs. The wraparound porch with Doric columns and angled entry in a simulated turret are noteworthy architectural features. J. M. Ashley, Sr., acquired the property in 1905 but probably did not begin construction of the present house until around 1913, according to tax roll research. In that year, the property's value jumped from $150 to $600, and by 1915, the property's worth increased dramatically, to $2,500, suggesting the completion of this house. Ashley continued to pay the taxes until his death in 1927; his estate paid the taxes in 1928. Anne Ashley Dickinson, perhaps Ashley's daughter, then paid property taxes through 1940.
